EDP Renováveis guarantees construction of a third wind farm in New York state
EDP Renováveis, through its U.S. affiliate Horizon Wind Energy, guaranteed approval of a new wind farm in New York state. A license, granted this week by the New York State Public Service Commission, authorizes the installation of 229 MW. With this authorization of the Marble River project, which also involves connection to the local electricity grid, Horizon is enabled to go forward with the construction as early as this year, with a view to commencing operations in 2009. Marble River will thus be Horizon’s third wind farm in New York state. The company, in partnership with Iberdrola, controls Maple Ridge, the largest wind farm of the region, with an installed capacity of 322 MW. Horizon also holds Madison Wind Farm, with 12 MW. “New York is a very important state for Horizon. It has wind resources and attractive energy prices,” says António Martins da Costa, executive president of Horizon Wind Energy. The energy produced by Marble River will be sold on the wholesale markets through bilateral contracts or on the Spot Market managed by the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO). Horizon is thus proceeding with the objectives set forth in its plan for expansion in the United States. The company has wind farms in operation in six states, and is set to develop projects in 11 more states.
