EDPR Welcomes Local Summer Camps to South Branch Wind Farm

On Thursday, July 24, EDP Renewables Canada along with Siemens Canada LTD and a team of educators from the KidWind Project joined together to host more than 150 local summer campers from across the towns of Crysler, Embrun, Russell, Avonmore, Chesterville, and Morrisburg for a day filled with science and engineering based activities centered around the mechanics of wind energy.

While visiting the 30 megawatt wind farm, the campers participated in blade design challenges, where they learned the principles behind torque and aerodynamics, as well as, took a spin at engineering their own sail powered cars and learned the basics behind the science of harnessing the wind. Following the lessons and challenges, the campers took a tour of the South Branch Wind Farm and got a chance to meet with the Ontario technicians who engineered the turbines and climb them on a regular basis for maintenance. The visit then concluded with a catered lunch and open time for breakout learning and field time.

The event was a great success and future educational outreach events and tours are being planned for later dates.
