EDP will help to implement the new Sustainable Development Goals adopted at the United Nations Summit taking place in New York. António Mexia, CEO of EDP was invited to take part in one of the sessions, the United Nations Private Sector Forum. He presented the Company's commitments to fight climate change, one of the 17 goals that have now replaced the eight Millennium Development Goals completed this year. A dominant topic in New York and on the agenda of the United Nations, which is preparing to adopt a new global agreement at COP 21, scheduled for Paris in early December, climate change underpins EDP's strategy. Addressing an audience of business people, non-governmental organisations and leaders of various countries, António Mexia described the steps already taken by EDP in this area and set targets for the future (see topics). The invitation to EDP to tell the world about its commitment at a forum attended by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and global giants such as Facebook, represented by CEO Mark Zukerberg, was justified by the organisation as an example of the role the private sector can play in combating one of the greatest threats facing humanity. In line with what the United Nations expects of the private sector, EDP has already incorporated climate change into its business strategy. The focus on producing energy from renewable sources and promoting energy efficiency are the best examples of the course of sustainable growth being followed by the company. EDP also participates in the Low Carbon Technology Partnership Initiative, a collaborative international platform promoted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, whose findings will be presented at the COP 21 Climate Summit in Paris. The goal: to propose technological and regulatory solutions that cultivate the development of low-carbon technology, particularly the speedier growth of renewable energy across the globe.
