Children from the Barrié de la Maza School in Santa Comba (A Coruña) named winners of the second edition of the Wind Experts contest. The winning project, which consists of three wind turbines powered by solar panels, was selected by the jury out of 75 entries from schools across Spain. EDPR’s Wind Experts contest aims to make children aware of the importance of wind energy.

Madrid, 21 June 2017: EDP Renewables (EDP Renewables, Euronext: EDPR), a global leader in the renewable energy sector and one of the world’s largest wind energy producers, has awarded the first prize in the second edition of its Wind Experts contest to a group of sixth graders from the Barrié de la Maza School in Santa Comba (A Coruña).

The award ceremony, held at the winning group’s school, was attended by EDPR’s Head of Business in Galicia, José Toja. In addition to an official plaque, which is given to everyone taking part in the contest, this first prize also includes a visit to an EDPR wind farm located in the province, a science workshop that will take place at the school and toys provided by Science4you (the contest’s partner toy company).

The winning group at the Barrié de la Maza School, dubbed los Eólicos, designed and built three wind turbines fitted with miniature solar panels on the upper part of the structure which activate the turbines when exposed to sunlight.

The children, aged 10-13, were helped by a teacher at their school during the design process for the wind turbines. The jury sifted through videos and pictures of the children developing their prototypes to select the winning entry.

The goal of EDPR’s contest is to raise awareness among children about the importance of wind energy and the results of this second edition are a clear reflection of just how popular this initiative has become. Close to 300 children divided into 75 groups at 25 different primary schools across Spain took part in this year’s edition, an increase of 150% versus the first edition.

João Paulo Costeria, CEO of EDP Renewables Europe, said: “These types of initiatives help make future generations aware of renewable energy and the importance of responsible energy consumption, as well as underscoring the benefits of sustainable development”.
