Second place was awarded to students from the Engineering and Architecture Department of Universidad de Zaragoza, while third prize went to students from the Advanced School of Mining and Energy Engineering at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

Madrid, 28 September 2017 EDP Renewables (Euronext: EDPR), a global leader in the renewable energy sector and one of the world's largest wind energy producers, and the EDP Foundation, have announced the winner of the EDPR University Challenge 2017 for students from Spanish universities. The awards ceremony was hosted by Rocío Sicre, Country Manager of EDP Renewables in Spain.



The five shortlisted groups presented their projects to the audience and judging panel, which comprised of: Enrique Doheijo, Senior Energy Manager, Deloitte; Telmo Vieira, a Partner at Premivalor Consulting; Ceferino Viescas, Operational Director, EDPR Technical Department; and Joaquín García Boto, Promotional Director, EDPR Spain.



The winning project entitled Wind Energy Generation in Buildings was presented by students from the Gipuzkoa School of Engineering at Universidad del País Vasco, supervised by their professor Alain Ulacia Manterola.



The projects awarded second and third place, respectively, were: Improved mobility by means of wind energy, presented by students from the Engineering and Architecture Department at Universidad de Zaragoza and Smart streetlights presented by students from the Advanced School of Mining and Energy Engineering at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.







As well as the three winning projects, the following two entries were also shortlisted:





Re-use of residual cold at regasification plants presented by students from the Advanced School of Industrial Engineering at Universidad Politécnica de Valencia.

Artificial coral reef presented by students from the Advanced School of Experimental Science and Technology at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos.



The winning team was awarded a prize of 6,000 euros. The professor who supervised the winning entry was also awarded 3,000 euros. The group awarded second place was awarded 3,000 euros to be distributed among its members, and 1,500 for the project coordinator. And the group in third place was awarded 2,000 for each group member and 1,000 for the supervising professor.



The ninth edition of the EDPR University Challenge has been particularly successfully, attracting 71 entries from universities. EDPR has been running the competition since 2009 and the number of entries and their quality gets higher every year. Rocío Sicre, Country Manager of EDP Renewables Spain said: "the quality of the projects submitted this year has been very high. The objective of the Challenge is to act as a liaison between the academic and business worlds, incentivising creativity and innovation, as well as fostering knowledge on the renewable energy sector. As a company, we are always looking to the future and supporting initiatives like this one is the best way to contribute towards the development of the sector and the society of tomorrow".
