EDP Renewables North America Announces Operations Beginning at Los Cañones Wind Farm in Coahuila, Mexico

Wednesday 29, November 2023

Los Cañones Wind Farm will generate 96 megawatts of renewable energy annually while saving more than 127 million gallons of water annually.

Ejido Hipólito, Coahuila, Mexico, November 28, 2023 – EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA), a leading renewable energy developer and a top five renewable energy operator in the United States, celebrates Los Cañones Wind Farm becoming operational in Coahuila, Mexico.

Los Cañones Wind Farm represents an estimated capital investment of approximately $140+ million and contributes to the local economy through job creation and funding to the community. During construction, the project created more than 710 full-time equivalent jobs and currently employs 11 permanent positions to operate and maintain the project. Los Cañones has also contributed millions of dollars of spending within 50 miles of the project, supporting local businesses such as restaurants, gas stations, hotels, shops, and service providers. In addition, the wind farm will disperse millions to landowners through land lease payments and pay millions more to local governments, enhancing area schools, emergency services, and infrastructure.

Beyond economic support, wind energy helps reduce the negative impact of climate change by enhancing air quality and limiting water consumption. Los Cañones Wind Farm will save more than 127 million gallons of water each year, which is the amount of water conventional generation sources would need to produce the same energy capacity as the wind farm.

Los Cañones Wind Farm is EDPR NA’s third renewable energy site in Mexico, with 496 MW of operating capacity in the country. In addition to Los Cañones, the company also operates the 200 MW Eólica de Coahuila Wind Farm in General Cepeda and Ramos Arizpe municipalities, and the 200-MW Los Cuervos Wind Farm in Aguascalientes. EDPR NA’s projects in Mexico have created 46 permanent jobs and more than 1,560 construction jobs for the communities where EDPR NA’s renewable energy project operate across the country.
