Retrofitting of overhead power lines to reduce avian death rates due to collision or electrocution

Often many birds die each year in Spain as a result of collision or electrocution with overhead power cables, resulting in outages and imbalances in the electrical distribution system. For this purpose, as many measures involving electrical and technical retrofitting as necessary must be adopted in order to avoid or reduce the number of incidents as much as possible.

Aware of this problematic, between 2012 and 2013 EDPR had financed a project to retrofit the existing electrical distribution overhead power line network in the vicinity of its wind farms that had been identified as potentially dangerous by technical personnel from the Castilla La Mancha Council.

The works required an investment of over 110,000€ and consisted in retrofitting over 70 supports with the purpose of reducing avian death rates due to collision or electrocution in the area.
